MA Professor Outi Remes appointed Director of the New Ashgate Gallery

Dr. Outi Remes, Adjunct Associate Professor teaching Contemporary Art as part of the MA in Art History and Visual Culture, has recently been appointed Director of the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, the largest commercial gallery for contemporary craft in the region. Dr. Remes plans to develop the gallery's strategic position in the region as well as its fine art and educational programmes.

Dr. Remes is also the curator of three exhibition seasons at the Bracknell Gallery; December 2011-January 2012, February–March 2012 and April-June 2012.

The first of these showcases the artist, Raimi Gbadamosi and his exhibition entitled 'Banquet'.

A banquet is a meeting point for people predicated with a complicated set of social relationships. As is often the case, “bad news goes better with food”. Inviting people to a banquet allows for social interaction beyond the proclaimed reason behind the banquet. Moreover, even though banquets are often celebratory feasts, they frequently highlight social exclusion, emphasizing a particular exchange between differing and opposing parties.

Codes of propriety also surround banquets: from dress to deportment; decorum and use of language; an understanding of the managed engagement between the individuals at the meal.

The exhibition runs through both galleries and encourages its viewers to become involved in creating new understandings.

Mr Gbadamosi is a British conceptual artist and writer. His work addresses themes of identity and art theory, often using his trademark motif of yellow, white and black. He received his Doctorate in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, is a member of the Interdisciplinary Research Group, Afroeuropeans, University of Leon, Spain, and the 'Black Body' group at Goldsmiths College, London. He is also on the Editorial Board of Third Text.
