Speaker Highlights Cuba's Faults and its Assets

Richmond International Society hosted Luis Marron, Political Councillor for the Cuban Embassy, as he gave an unforgettable guest lecture on the Cuban Revolution and discussing the positive and negative impacts it had on the country. Over 60 Richmond students gathered in Asa Briggs to hear Mr Marron's account of Cuba's history, where the country stands today and hopes for the future. Students appreciated his honesty as he answered questions that covered a wide spectrum of topics. Here are some memorable quotes that really captured students:
"Never would I say that Cuba is perfect, because it isn't. No country is perfect. Socialism isn't perfect and democracry isn't perfect. We have our problems which we are well aware of and we are trying everyday to improve those. But Cuba wants to improve these issues on its own."
"I really hope that America does lift the travel ban. I would love for America and Cuba to co-exist in peace. We have a lot to learn from America, as I believe America has a lot to learn from Cuba. Cuba is a beautiful country and I hope everyone in their lifetime gets a chance to visit. There will be some things you love and some things you hate about the country, but thats true of anywhere you go."
"I have absolutely no problem sitting down and talking to an American, but I do know that there are several Americans who would have a problem talking with me. But I wish that wasn't the case because I don't think you should automatically view someone based on the government of their country. Government and people need to be kept separate and that is what I try to do everyday."
"For the future, I hope that Cuban's relations with other countries improves so that we co-exist in peace. But the change will obviously not take place over night, but I feel that Cuba is prepared for the change to occur. The question is wither or not the rest of the world is. I can honestly say I certainly hope they wish to co-exist in peace as well."
