Lloyd’s of London Plays Host to 25 Richmond Students

On Old Bond Street: Some of the students who visited Lloyd's of London

On Friday 4th December some of the best-dressed young people in the City of London were 25 Foundations Program students from Richmond, the American International University. The world-famous insurance market stipulates that visitors observe a strict dress code – no jeans, no trainers –and Richmond’s students complied fully – with impeccable behaviour to match their smart attire.

Lloyd’s of London is interesting from both an architectural as well as a business point of view. The building was designed by Richard Rogers, who also designed the Pompidou Centre in Paris. All the pipe-work and lifts are situated on the outside of the building. The students first enjoyed a breath-taking ride up and down the building in one of the exterior glass lifts which afford a fantastic view over London. Afterwards, they attended a talk on the history, development and present-day activities of Lloyd’s as well as a tour of the amazing interior of the building where numerous brokers and syndicates were hard at work.

The trip to Lloyd’s was the initiative of Mr. Stephen Thomas, a lecturer in the Foundations Program. He was accompanied by Mrs. Julia Jeannet, the Program’s co-ordinator. Despite the rather dull image the word “insurance” conjures up, the day out – with lunch together in Old Broad Street, as well as a short trip to the Bank of England Museum – was considered by the students to be a lot of fun.
