Research in Exploiting Camera Phones for Collaborative & Intelligent Design

It is well known that designers frequently generate early design ideas outside their usual workplace such as on a train, in a restaurant or indeed in the tranquil and inspiring environment of say the countryside. For such reasons, paper-based freehand sketching is still widely used by practicing designers to externalise their early form design solutions. These collectively highlight that portability and availability of a sketching medium are still very important. At the same time, existing Computer-Aided Design systems are mostly useful for the later design stages.

This presentation reports on the on-going research into the development of a camera phone-aided design system. Such a system is intended to enable designers to remotely obtain visual representations of 3D geometric models from freehand sketches, by combining paper portability with that of camera phones. In addition, by connecting this emerging technology with knowledge-based techniques, designers can be given feedback about their evolving solution represented in the form of a sketch. The presentation will include a demonstration of a prototype of this camera phone-aided design system.

Dr. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg received a Ph.D. in the area of concurrent product design from the Department of Design, Manufacture & Engineering Management,, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He is currently the Head of Department, Manufacturing Engineering, University of Malta. Since 2002, he has been regularly appointed by the EU Commission to evaluate research projects. Dr Borg has had a number of Government appointments including member on the Malta Standards Authority, the National Commission For Sustainable Development and the Malta Council for Science & Technology. Dr. Ing. Borg is a member of the Institute of Engineering Designers (UK), the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (UK), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (USA) and the Chamber of Engineers (Malta). In May 2003, Dr Borg was awarded a Medal of Appreciation by the Institution of Engineering Designers at a ceremony held in the House of Commons.
