Green Project River Clean-Up

19/10/2009

On the 11th of October, 13 Richmond students and Green Project members attended a monthly river clean-up in Sutton. Working in conjunction with the Wandle Trust, they helped in the restoration of the Wandle River, a small chalk-stream that feeds into the Thames. For decades the river had become an unsanitary and unsafe area due to neglect and poor waste management. But with the help of the Wandle Trust and local residents, it has been making a fantastic comeback and is now considered one of South London's natural gems!

The Green Project leads students every month to different areas along the river. In keeping with our commitment to community service and upholding our environmental values, we hope to inspire students and staff to consider small ways of making an impact in their community. In time, natural habitats like the Wandle River will become standards of community activism and local volunteerism to ensure the sustainability of our city.

The next cleanup is scheduled for 8 November. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Brendan Pastor or Mahelet Mekonnen for further information.
