Two Members of Richmond Faculty Co-Author Work on Globalisation, Nationalism, Postcolonialism and Bollywood

Dom Alessio (Director of the Study Abroad Program and Associate Professor of History) and Jessica Langer (Adjunct Faculty Member in Communications) have just co-authored a new article entitled “Nationalism and postcolonialism in Indian science fiction: Bollywood’s Koi... Mil Gaya (2002)” for the journal New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film (vol. 5, no.3 [Fall 2007], 217-229). Bollywood is a growing field of academic interest; in this article, Dom and Jessica (who also work together in New Zealand studies) examine the ways in which Bollywood has challenged the cinematic hegemony of Hollywood. At the same time, however, the article also raises concerns about the influence of Indian nationalism on Bollywood film and its potential impact and meaning for minority religious groups in the country, especially Muslims and Christians.

Dom and Jess’s next project is an examination of Maori representation in New Zealand science fiction.
