Former LSE director named Vice Chair of Academic Governors
John Ashworth, former director of the London School of Economics and Chairman of the British Library has assumed the Vice Chairmanship of Richmond University’s Academic Governors. The Academic Governors serve as overseers of the quality of Richmond’s academic programs which were recently commended for ‘content, depth and rigor’ by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education visiting evaluation team. Ashworth has served as a Richmond Academic Governor for nearly a decade and is also a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. The Chairman of the Academic Governors continues to be The Lord Briggs of Lewes who is the world’s leading authority in Victorian History. Lord Briggs is the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex and Chancellor of the Open University.
Biographical Note
Dr John Ashworth was foundation Professor of Biology at the University of Essex [1974], has degrees in chemistry and biochemistry and has published articles on biochemical, cell biological, genetic, physiological and educational topics. He was Chief Scientist of the Central Policy Review Staff in the Cabinet Office [1976-81] where he advised Prime Ministers Callaghan and Thatcher. Subsequently he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford [1981-90] and then Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science [1990-96] and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Metropolitan Affairs of the University of London [1991-92].He was Chairman of the Board of the British Library [1996 -2001].
He has been an ex officio member of the Advisory Board for the Research Councils; the Advisory Council for Applied Research and Development; UK Titulaire on the Comite de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique (CREST) of the EEC; UK co-chairman of the UK/USSR Joint Committee on Science and Technology; a member of the Electronics Economic Development Committee of the National Economic Development Council; the Council of the Economic and Social Research Council; the Barbican Arts Centre Committee; non-executive Director of J. Sainsbury’s plc; of Granada plc; of the North East London Strategic Health Authority and Chairman of the National Accreditation Council for Certification Bodies (BSI); the Board of the National Computer Centre and the Technical Advisory Committee, Jaguar Cars Limited.
He is currently Chairman of the Board of Barts and The Royal London NHS Trust, a governor of the Ditchley Foundation; of the American International University in London; Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Cancer Research; President of the Council for the Assistance of Refugee Academics [CARA] and a member of the DEMOS Advisory Council.
