First Year Experience – Lecture Series

On Wednesday 19 September, First Year students were treated to a selection of lectures based around the theme of “London on the Cutting Edge”. London is an incredibly rich resource for Richmond students, and the lectures exposed students to ideas and avenues for future exploration.

The guest speakers all came from Richmond’s in house talent:

Dr. Alex Seago, internationally acclaimed expert in this field, spoke to a packed room of students on London’s subcultures and styles over the past 50 years. Great visuals and music, and a look at how London’s unique fashion and style has been shaped, made Dr. Seago’s performance a delightful late Wednesday afternoon experience.

Dr. John Dickerson, a well known artist, art historian and one of Richmond’s longest serving faculty, spoke of London as a cultural magnet. He provided wonderful advice on how best to approach the vast opportunities available. From the museums, music, dance and sporting events that attract Londoners, among other things, to the markets, food and parks that enrich London’s landscape, he charmed us with his insights and stories.

Dr. Ivan Cohen, one of Richmond’s leading professors in finance and economics – who also boasts that he is “a real Londoner, born and bred” – spoke to over 80 First Year students on London as a Global Financial Centre. The mostly business majors were exposed to some of the key elements of London’s financial success and major role in the global economy. Dr. Cohen’s very English humour may have initially caught some students off guard but by the end of the hour, everyone seemed to go away with a real sense of how great it was to be studying at Richmond, in the most amazing of cities.
