Dr Robert J. Wallis talks at the ICA (Institute for Contemporary Art)

17/03/2011

Prehistoric Rock Engravings, Hogsbyn, Sweden

Dr Robert J. Wallis, Professor of Visual Culture and Director of the MA in Art History and Visual Culture, will be giving a talk at the ICA entitled 'Shamanism and Art: From Cave Painting to the White Cube'. Dr Wallis will introduce work he is preparing for a monograph examining the way in which scholars have linked the concepts of art and shamanism over time and across cultures. Wallis engages critically with this entanglement of art and shamanism, with examples ranging from prehistoric cave art, rock art in Namibia, and modern art by Kandinsky, Van Gogh and Beuys, to the contemporary artists Marcus Coates and Cang Xin. The talk is part of a series accompanying an exhibition by the sculptor, film-maker and musician Nathanial Mellors.
