Dr. Rafal Soborski Presents Paper at the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association
13/05/2011
Dr Rafal Soborski presented his paper, ‘Globalization and Ideology: A critical review of the debate’, at the annual conference of the PSA in London on 20 April in the panel ‘The Global in Politics’ (which he also chaired). The paper discusses two strands of literature. The first strand engages with the issue of the desirable response to the process globalization and considers the question of whether political ideology of any stripe may guide effective managing or confronting of globalization or some aspects of it. The second strand is concerned with the impact of globalization on conventional ideological constellations. While appreciating the insights provided by both literatures, the paper suggests that each is limited by their (often unacknowledged) assumptions regarding, on the one hand, the nature of ideology and, on the other hand, the supposed novelty of globalization. The paper identifies the logical and political setbacks resulting from these assumptions and argues for a conceptual historical analysis of ideological discourse as a way out of the defective terms of the existing debate.
