On Friday 26th February Dr. Maurice Milne, Emeritus Professor of Humanities at Richmond, kindly acted as host and guide to Julia Jeannet when she arrived in Newcastle for a conference. Together with Dr. Christine Zaher, Director of the Academic Literacies Program, Julia was attending a one-day conference at Newcastle University organised by BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes). The theme of the conference was “Engaging and Motivating EAP students.”
Dr. Milne is thoroughly enjoying his retirement. He now has much more time to devote to his scholarly research. He has developed an interest in three Scottish writers: Sir Walter Scott, Thomas Carlyle and James Hogg. Using the National Library of Scotland as his principal resource, Dr. Milne happily gives talks to the Scots about writers whose memory they ought to cherish.
Julia was delighted to renew acquaintance with Dr. Milne. For many years both he and Dr. Michele Cohen taught one of the Foundations Program courses (now entitled “Fundamentals of Conceptual Thinking”). Their active participation in the Foundations Program both enhanced its profile and strengthened its implementation. Apart from enjoying a fascinating tour of Newcastle provided by her former colleague, Julia was also able to discuss ideas for re-vamping one of the FP courses – ideas that Dr. Milne enthusiastically commented on. It seems that collaboration between Richmond faculty extends even into retirement!
