Dr. James D. Boys To Present Paper at International Conference

Dr. James D. Boys

Richmond University's resident Americanist Dr. James D. Boys flies to America this week to deliver a conference paper at the University of North Dakota at an event to mark the 45th anniversary of a visit by President Kennedy to the campus.

The conference, John F. Kennedy: History, Memory, Legacy, will run from September 25-28 and will consider the many aspects of Kennedy's legacy in an attempt to explain his continued hold on the American imagination. Of particular interest to Dr. Boys will be the attendance of Theodore Sorensen, Special Assistant to the President and author of Kennedy one of the first biographies of the late president. Other notable attendees include the American biographer, Richard Reeves, author of Profile in Power, one of the best books written on Kennedy in the last twenty years.

Dr. Boys will be delivering a paper entitled, "JFK: The Exceptional Ideal," which will explore the manner in which the administration is held up for emulation and imitation by a series of politicians and Hollywood film makers. The paper will be accompanied by a running piece of film, highlighting the use of imagery to support the central premise of the thesis.

Dr. Boys, who met Arthur Schlesinger Jr, author of the other early work on Kennedy, 'A Thousand Days' during the course of his Master's Degree, is looking forward to hearing Sorensen speak. "This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with other scholars on one of my main areas of interest and research. The chance to meet and hear Sorensen speak will be a once in a lifetime opportunity."

It is anticipated that Dr. Boys will present a version of his paper to Richmond University students upon his return from America, so look out for the announcement.
