Dr. Deborah Schultz presents at University of Sussex Conference

Dr Deborah Schultz, MA Art History faculty, gave a paper at the conference Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text held at the University of Sussex, Falmer, 25–26 March 2011. The conference was small but international with around 100 delegates. Dr Schultz’s presentation on ‘Travelling Words’ explored the use of found postcards in films made by poet and artist Marcel Broodthaers.
These were standard postcards with an image on one side and words on the other, chosen to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the verbal and visual arts. Broodthaers’s short films animated the existing objects and opened up the suggestion of a narrative. Viewers of these works are offered access to private correspondence between unknown people from the past and encouraged to construct their own narratives from the small pieces of information given. Dr Schultz’s presentation was made possible due to a grant from the Faculty Research and Development Committee.
