22/11/2011
Dr Arkhangelskaya is Head of the Centre for Information and International Relations at the Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, in Moscow. She is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
She presented her research to a joint class comprised of students from the MA in International Relations (Global Political Economy), undergradaute students in Russian Politics and History, and interested students from the Richmond International Society (RIS) on Monday 21st November 2011, in Asa Briggs Hall. Relations between Russia and Africa were explored, in the context of the rise of the BRICS, with particular reference to the role of South Africa in the global economy, and the growing influence of China and India in Africa in political and economic terms.
In a lively question and answer session that followed her presentation, Dr Arkhangelskaya fielded questions relating to Russia's relations with China, the role of multinational corporations in Africa, the nature of the African state, Russia's strategic directions, where responsibility for labour and environmental standards lies in relations to African investment, and the prospects for sub-regional groupings in Africa.
Richmond, the American International University in London wishes Dr Arkhangelskaya well for the rest of her visit to the UK.
