Richmond Welcomes New Students with Talks by Councillor Serge Lourie and Jason Debney

Serge Lourie and Jason Debney with
Richmond University President Dr. Hackforth-Jones

Richmond celebrated the start of the Spring Semester and welcomed many students on Thursday January 17th. The evening began in the Taylor Library lecture theatre, where President Jos Hackforth-Jones extended a warm welcome to the new students and introduced Serge Lourie, Council Leader for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Councillor Lourie gave an entertaining and informative talk, describing the local Borough in the context of its unique history, facilities and culture. Despite promising no jokes, his talk was very amusing and painted a fascinating picture of this vibrant corner of London.

Jason Debney, Co-ordinator of the Thames Landscape Strategy then gave an engrossing description of the work underway to preserve, document and develop the River Thames between Hampton and Kew. This stretch of river houses a hugely diverse range of plant and animal life, and its environmental, educational and recreational value is undoubted. The Thames Landscape Strategy works with many volunteers to preserve this beautiful area, through numerous projects from tree cutting to boat building. Many Richmond students have volunteered their time to help these local projects
