Bank of England Headquarters in London

On Friday 3rd November 2006 several students from a variety of student groups (including members of the Finance Society and others) joined a meeting arranged by Richmond's Economics Society to attend a video and presentation session at the Bank of England in London's Threadneedle Street. At the Bank the students learnt about the role and functions of the central bank, how it operates vis-à-vis the Government and the composition of its interest-rate setting panel: the Monetary Policy Committee. A few of the assembled group had the opportunity to meet briefly with one of the Bank's senior officials, Dr Fisher, who had come along for the meeting on Dr Dabir-Alai's invitation.

As well as viewing the many exhibits at the Bank's museum, members of the group also had a chance to hold and lift a gold bar weighing 13 kilograms which, on the day of the visit, was said to be worth just above £131,000.

The accompanying photograph shows the group (minus Dr. Dabir-Alai, who's behind the camera) outside the Bank.
