Dr. Martin D. Brown

Dr. Martin D. Brown will be giving a paper this week at a conference being held at Oriel College, Oxford, entitled, ‘The Changing Landscape of East-Central Europe since 1700 in Transnational Context’.

The proceedings were organised by the British, Czech and Slovak Historians’ Forum (BCSHF) and the Modern European History Research Centre (MEHRC), University of Oxford. Further support has been generously provided by the British Academy, Centre for East European Language Based Area Studies (CEELBAS), the Austrian Cultural Forum, London and the University of Oxford History Faculty.

The conference papers will reflect current work on a range of issues relating to environment, (de)industrialization, and conservation, with a focus on the Czech and Slovak lands, but with comparative material from elsewhere in central Europe and beyond, including a British dimension. Contributions will come from a number of internationally recognised scholars and the conference runs from 24 to 26 September 2009.

Dr. Brown’s paper is entitled ‘Frontiers, Landscapes and Zones: Central Europe as an Arena for Cold War, 1945-75’.
