Professor Mary Robert

Mary Robert, Professor of Lens Media, has been with Richmond since 1978 and has been fully involved with the growth and expansion of its Art Department. As a full time member of faculty, she superintends the Photography and the Video components of the Art, Design and Media (ADAM) major and teaches a full range of the Photography courses and senior year Fine Art projects courses.

Mary Robert's professional practice includes both fine art exhibition and commercial work, her primary areas of specialism being portraiture and travel. She has worked in several regions of the world including North America and Mexico, West Africa, Asia, Russia and the former Soviet Union, Turkey and much of Europe. At its most typical, her work explores relationships between people and their cultural context. Her exhibition work includes photography, video and installation. Her travel work appears in journals, newspapers and books including The Guardian, The Independent, Blueprint, Tate, Middle East Review and various book covers for Routledge Publishing and others. She is represented by Axiom Photographic Agency.

Her most recent solo exhibitions have drawn upon an involved and on-going body of research which she has been conducting in Istanbul. These exhibitions have shown in Paris(France), Leeds(England) and Puebla (Mexico).

Robert's Fine Art work is represented in the permanent collections of the Biblioteque Nationale de France in Paris, The National Portrait Gallery in London and The Philadelphia Museum and Indianapolis Museum of Art in the USA. She is represented in numerous private collections in the UK, USA and throughout continental Europe.

Her most extensive body of commercial work features internationally known classical musicians. Her clients include Decca Records, London Records, Virgin Classics, Nimbus Records, Teldec Records and Sony Classical. In this area, she is represented by The Lebrecht Classical Music Collection.

Professor Robert received her BA from the University of Akron in Ohio and her MA RCA from the Royal College of Art in London.

She is listed in the current edition of 'Who's Who in Art', is a part time Tutor in Photography at the Royal College of Art and is the sole proprietor of Mary Robert Photoworks.
