Dr John O’Connell
Associate Professor of Psychology
John O'Connell was raised in a military family and spent his formative years in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and various parts of the United States. Dr. O'Connell is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist (USA) and received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia, USA.
John served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Richmond, The American International University in London (1990-2006). Prior to joining Richmond, he was the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services and Associate Professor of Counselor Education at Montana State University.
His areas of professional interests and experience fall into two broad categories: (1) University student mental health; and (2) The impact of institutional environmental factors on academic success, student satisfaction and academic persistence. John is a past Fulbright Scholar (Educational Administrators to Germany); a full-year visiting professor at Kumamoto University of Commerce, Kumamoto, Japan; and a graduate of the Institute for Educational Management, Harvard University.
Among his varied interests, John lists fly fishing, vintage guitars and three incredible granddaughters...not necessarily in that order.
