Richmond, the American International University in London, is inviting entrants to its annual essay writing competition, with a first prize of a £6000 scholarship towards tuition fees for undergraduate study at Richmond.

Enter the Richmond essay writing competition
In 1500-2000 words submit your essay to Richmond University by April 1st, 2011. The writing competition is open to students in their final year of secondary school only. Transfer, visiting, study abroad and graduate students are not eligible for this award. All applicants must apply and be admitted to Richmond University prior to the scholarship deadline date of March 1st, 2011. The winning entrant will receive a £6000* scholarship towards undergraduate study at Richmond. Winners will be notified prior to May 1st, 2011.
*Students who pay their tuition fees in US dollars will receive an equivalent award in US dollars.

Topic
In order to become a highly effective leader - one who can make a real difference for the better in his or her chosen career path – explain what skills and expertise a university undergraduate needs to develop. Take a look at the Richmond website; how would you use the Richmond experience to develop your own potential?
Eligibility
Students entering or in their 12th year of study are eligible to compete in the writing competition. Students who are selected as winners of the writing scholarship competition must attend Richmond, the American International University in London to be eligible to receive the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is only valid as a discount against annual tuition at Richmond, the American International University in London. Students already enrolled at Richmond are not eligible. The writing scholarship may be used in combination with other Richmond scholarships, grants or financial assistance up to the cost of attendance.
Language
The essay will be written in English.
Number of entries
One entry per candidate.
Deadline for submission
Deadline for entries is midnight (GMT) April 1st, 2011. All entries must be submitted by on date in order to enter the competition.
Announcement of winner
The winning entry will be announced on May 1st, 2011.The scholarship award will be made in the form of a letter which will be posted via DHL to the winning applicant’s home address.
Submission requirements
The essay must be submitted electronically as an attachment in .doc or .pdf form only to: richmondessay2011@richmond.ac.uk or via the online submission form.
Authorship
The essay must be original and the sole work of the participant. (All entries will be downloaded by the competition organizers to a plagiarism detection software program.) Any references or quotations must be cited using footnotes or endnotes or in-text citation systems.
Length
The essay should be a minimum of 1,500 words and a maximum of 2,000, excluding the cover page, footnotes, end notes and references.
The essay will be word-processed, double spaced, font size 12, with all pages numbered. The essay must have a cover page providing all the following information:
- an original essay title
- the competitor’s full name
- the competitor’s passport number and country of issue
- the competitor’s postal address
- the email address
- the name and address of the secondary school attended by the competitor

Regulations
By submitting an entry, the competitor agrees to and accepts the following:
- The contestant must be eligible for university placement at Richmond – please see the website www.richmond.ac.uk for entry requirements.
- The essay is original and has not been submitted for publication or to any other competition.
- The essay conforms to all the stated requirements for language, submission, authorship, length and format.
- All submissions become the property Richmond, the American International University in London and will not be returned.
- The winning entry may be printed, published or otherwise made available by the competition organizers, and this may require editing and/or modification of the original submission. Richmond, the American International University in London and its sponsors reserve the right to publish in print or on the website part or all of the essays received, including the writer’s name and secondary school and the amount of the scholarship.
- The decision of the competition committee is final and there is no appeal.
