Ceremony Information

The ceremony begins with a fanfare from the Barbican Brass Ensemble and the 'Processional'.
Members of the graduating class enter the hall and take their seats as allocated. They are followed by the President, Chancellor, Trustees, Academic Governors, distinguished guests and faculty who are seated on stage.

The President of the University opens the ceremony and welcomes graduating students, their friends, families, distinguished guests and members of the University's faculty and staff.

The awarding of Honorary degrees to selected candidates begins.
Each year distinguished individuals are chosen to be honoured by a Richmond Honorary Degree. Citations about the careers and achievements of each candidate are read by the President prior to the awarding of Honorary Degrees by the Chancellor and Provost. Honorary Degree recipients then address the graduating students and guests with a brief 'Response'.
The next part of the ceremony is the 'Presentation of Degrees' to the graduate and undergraduate students.
Each graduating student walks up to the stage where they are announced by name before walking across to receive their diploma from the President. There is a brief pause for the photographer to take a picture of the graduate and the President after which the graduate exits the other side of the stage walking past faculty and VIP guests before reclaiming their seat with the class.
The ceremony ends with a 'Farewell from Students' given by a member of the graduating class who is selected by the Department Chairs.
The 'Recessional' begins with music from the Barbican Brass ensemble. The audience stands to honor the graduates. The procession begins from the stage with Trustees and Academic Governors followed by VIP guests, faculty and graduates.
