Armajaro Holdings Limited
Appointment Undergraduate Placement Student

The Armajaro Group

Armajaro is a global commodities and financial services business, with headquarters in London. Founded in 1998, Armajaro has three main business activities:

  • Commodities – cocoa, coffee and sugar origination and distribution
  • Asset Management – commodity fund investment management
  • Structured Products - arranging and dealing in bespoke financial instruments

Over 1,000 people work for the Armajaro Group and its various subsidiary companies around the world. Armajaro has operations in Europe, North & South America, West Africa and Asia.

Team Background and Role Details

In 2006 a Group Research department was established to provide research and forecasting services to our commodity divisions. A core element in the department’s activities is the supply of cocoa and coffee crop forecasts for those major producing countries where Armajaro has sourcing operations on the ground. Local teams undertake pod counts on a random sample of cocoa trees or estimate the volume of cherries on a sample of coffee trees. The data from the local teams is then emailed to the head office for analysis.

The placement student will share the existing responsibilities, which include data collection and maintenance of historical statistical databases of production, consumption, the international trade, stocks and prices of both cocoa beans and products and green and processed coffee; data analysis; collection and interpretation of soft information; internal reporting (regular briefing reports on e.g. supply and demand, stock consumption ratio, commitment of traders reports, futures market tenders and gradings) and compilation of PowerPoint slide shows to form the basis of presentations to clients.

The department works in close cooperation with the cocoa and coffee trading desks and the placement student will have an opportunity to learn at first hand about physical commodity markets, sources and end-users and futures market hedging. Since the origin suppliers of cocoa and coffee are all countries in various stages of development, the work will be of particular interest to students whose degree course combines Economics with International Development or International Business Studies. On the other hand we welcome applications from students who have taken modules providing technical skills which will enhance their contribution to data analysis.

With the assistance of local employees the department undertakes crop forecasting work in a number of origin countries – Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Indonesia and Ecuador for cocoa; and Brazil and Vietnam for coffee. The placement student will have an opportunity to travel to at least on of these countries during the course of the year.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should be seeking a 12 month placement from an Economics/Business orientated study degree. We don’t just want a back room technician – we are looking for someone who will be thoroughly comfortable fronting up. Strong spreadsheet and statistical analysis skills are also required. The job will involve preparing internal and external reports, and so an ability to write concisely and lucidly is important. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.

Some of the data that the appointee will be required to collect is in the public domain; however, much is subjective, proprietary and even confidential, and success in obtaining it will call for careful cultivation of contacts and awareness of the need to strike a sensible balance between information disclosed and intelligence gained in exchange.

Please send your CV and covering letter to:
