Academic gateways give access to internet sites and resources which have been selected by experts working within particular disciplines. There is a much better chance of finding quality information using these gateways.
PINAKES : A subject launchpad, or A gateway to gateways
In ancient times, the Library of Alexandria was seen as a universal store of human knowledge. As the Library grew in size, however, it became increasingly difficult to locate relevant material. The poet Callimachus solved the problem by compiling a catalogue called The Pinakes. On a far smaller scale, these Web pages hope to provide a similar function for Internet resources, by linking to the major subject gateways'. Designed by Dave Bond and Roddy MacLeod.

AHDS: Arts and Humanities Data Services
A wide range of resources for all the humanities disciplines, including a substantial collection of electronic texts.
The AHDS resource comprises the following individual sections:
ADS provides an integrated online catalogue to its collection and collections of other organisations (some 350,000 records) describing archaeological sites across the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe.
HDS brings together nealy 500 separate data collections transcribed, scanned or compiled from original sources, covering a time period from the 10th to the 20th century.
The OTA holds several thousand electronic texts in a variety of languages, including electronic editions of works by individual authors and standard reference works.
Performing Arts Database Service
PADS collects and promotes the use of digital resources to support research and teaching in the performing arts, including music, film, broadcast arts, theatre and dance. It also provides access to an increasing number of high-quality multimedia collections.
VADS: Visual Arts Database Service
VADS maintains a searchable archive of digital resources for use by the visual arts community for learning , teaching and research. Resources include The Imperial War Museum art collection, London College of Fashion archive, Documentary Photogrpahy computer-aided learning program, Bretton Hall's Halliwell and Basic Design collections.
BeCAL : Belief, Culture and Learning Information Gateway
The online Belief, Culture and Learning Information Gateway for learning and resources in values education and citizenship.
A Dutch national subject gateway aimed at the academic community. Quality resources are selected and classified according to the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie (Dutch Basic Classification).

World Wide Web Virtual Library
The VL is the oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee. It is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the web.
