Image Collections
Bridgeman Art Library - A leading source of art images representing museums, galleries and artists from around the world. Access to full-size images is available through the Library's subscription to Grove Art Online (see below).
EBSCOhost image collections - A collection of SOME 98,000+ images from the EBSCOhost databases (Acaemic Search Elite) including photos of people, places and natural science, historical photos and images of maps and flags. Images are sourced from Getty Images (archival/historical), United Press International (sports, politics, news) and the Motion & Television Archive.
FILTER Focusing Images for Learning and Teaching - an Enriched Resource - Links to image collections, including:
- The Social & Political History of Britain is a specially selected set of images from the archives of the HGPC, with editorial input from academics, journalists and archive specialists. This collection provides 7,000 images from 6 themes, spanning the period 1859 to the present day.
- St. Andrews University Library provides 15,000 images mainly from the James Valentine collection (a postcard archive of photography over the past 100 years), plus items from George Cowie and Robert Adam collections.
Grove Art Online: Image Collections - Searchable image collections covering hundreds of areas in the visual arts. These include:
- Art Resource - a fully searchable collection of 90,000 important images in art history.
- Bridgeman Art Library - over 100,000 art images from major international museums, galleries and auction houses.
- Art Image Links - over 40,000 images on hundreds of international museum and gallery web sites
Getty Images - Rights-managed and royalty-free images in a variety of collections, with relevant photography and illustrations for every project.
Images of England - A photographic record of all the listed buildings in England, maintained by Dave Postles at the University of Leicester.
Internet Gallery Guide - Designed as a quick access catalog of artistic images on the Internet, the guide contains links to many different Internet collections. It is not an index of every image at each URL, nor is it a directory of museum pages per se, but instead it hopes to connect users to the greatest number of artistic images with the least amount of effort. It is arranged in various ways: chronological, by genre, by geographical or ethinc division, and includes more general themes such as History or Voyages and Travels.
Nature Picture Library - Free online access to thousands of high-resolution photographs of flora and fauna in settings of every variety.
New York Public Library Digital Gallery - Access to over 275,000 images digitized from the collections of the NYPL. Subject areas include the arts & literature, cities & buildings, culture & society, history & geography, industry & technology, nature & science and printing & graphics.
New York Public Library Picture Collection Online - The Picture Collection Online (PCO) is a select group of images from The New York Public Library, Mid-Manhattan Library, Picture Collection. It comprises 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923.
Royal Scottish Geographical Society: Images For All - The RSGS holds a collection of around one hundred and fifty thousand maps, the archives of many travellers as well as those of the RSGS itself, and many images in a variety of formats. The aim of the project is to provide greater access to the collections.
US Fish & Wildlife Service - National Image Library - The National Image Library contains still photo images of wildlife, plants, National Wildlife Refuges and other scenics, as well as wildlife management work. You may search all the images through the National Image Library, or you may search by individual collection.
Visual Arts Data Service - the online resource for visual arts - Free, copyright cleared access to over 100,000 images from a large number of diverse collections. One of these collections is:
NICE Paintings (National Inventory of Continental European Paintings) - NICE Paintings is the first phase of an on-line inventory of all the 22,000 pre-1900 Continental European oil paintings in the UK's public collections. The database has been created by the National Inventory Research Project (NIRP), based at the University of Glasgow. It contains detailed records, and an increasing number of digital images, of nearly 8,000 paintings, principally in smaller regional collections with additional records and images being added.
