Europa World Plus

Europa World Plus is the online version of the Europa World Year Book and the nine-volume Regional Surveys of the World series covering political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.

BBC Monitoring Country Profiles

Free country profiles from the BBC, but you need to pay for more in-depth information. Provide an overview of the country as well as links to media sources for each country.

CIA World Factbook

The Factbook was created as an annual summary and update to the encyclopedic Joint Army & Navy Intelligence Studies. It gives detailed information on the geography, people, government, economy, communications, transport and military of 250 countries or regions of the world, and some information on transnational issues pertaining to each country.

Financial Times Country Reports

The FT produces nearly 200 reports a year with definitive and comprehensive assessments of countries, industrial sectors and financial and business topics.

Offers facts and figures about each country's geography, demographics, economy, government and political system; Fascinating historical, cultural and political background information; Country maps and flags; Climate and weather information for major cities; Up-to-date foreign currency exchange rates and the current time and time zone information for major cities.

International Monetary Fund : Country information

Mainly financial information and information on the country and its relations with the IMF. Access to the IMF Staff Country reports in PDF format.

Library of Congress Country Studies

Website for the on-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Because the original intent of the Series' sponsor was to focus primarily on lesser known areas of the world or regions in which U.S. forces might be deployed, the series is not all-inclusive. At present, 101 countries and regions are covered. Notable omissions include Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations.

Also hosts Portals to the World - links to electronic resources from around the world.

MSU Global Access

A portal to information about the world that contains a database of Websites and other resources selected by experts at Michigan State University. The website can be searched by country or region, and also by thematic area such as gender, the environment, international development etc.

OECD Economic Outlooks

Access to OECD publications via SourceOECD. Use OECD Economic Outlook for free information on the economic developments in OECD countries.

One World Country guides

70 educational guides to developing countries, focusing on human development issues.

STRATFOR (Strategic Forecasting)

STRATFOR is one of the world's leading private providers of global intelligence, analysis, and forecasting on geopolitical, security, and economic affairs including confidential consulting on existing or potential competitive and security threats that global companies and/or nation-states may face in specific markets or regions. Much of the content is free, though some articles are for subscribers only.

US Agency for International Development

USAID has been the principal U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. Use the Country Locator to find out about work and policy in particular countries.

US Department of State : Country Commercial Guides

Country Commercial Guides (CCG's) are prepared annually by U.S. embassies with the assistance of several U.S. government agencies. These reports present a comprehensive look at countries' commercial environments, using economic, political and market analysis. The CCG's were established by recommendation of the Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee (TPCC), a multi-agency task force, to consolidate various reporting documents prepared for the U.S. business community. They are available for the years 1996-2001.

World Audit

The primary focus of this website is on democracy, human rights, press freedom, corruption and the rule of law, and it provides country reports and statistics from a number of organisations including Amnesty, the CIA, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee, UNICEF as well as from official government websites

World Bank: Countries and regions

Much useful financial information, especially on countries in the Developing World and the former Eastern Bloc. You can search by country, by topic or by project. Also offers country data profiles covering people, the environment, the economy, technology and infrastructure and trade and finance.

World Gazetteer

Provides current population figures for the country and the towns and cities within each country. Also includes images of national flags, a clickable map, and a section of related links.

Znet Watch sites

A series of subsites devoted to ongoing hotspots and movements.

Regions include: Africa, Colombia, East Timor, Iraq, Ireland, Japan, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia.
