Short Loan, recommended reading and course reserve lists

Short Loan

The Library has a collection of core books and off-prints kept on short loan - these are books which appear as 'Required reading' on your course outlines or syllabus.

In most cases short-loan books are held only on the campus at which the course is taught.

You may borrow 2 short-loan items at a time, for a maximum of 4 hours.

You can renew short loan items as many times as you like providing they have not been reserved by another student.

Short Loans may also be kept overnight when checked out at the end of the working day.

Because short loan items are heavily used there are fines for late return and these can be quite high.

To avoid these fines please ensure your short loans are returned on time.

Recommended Reading

Many of the other books on your course outlines will be treated as 'Recommended Reading'.

These books can be found on the shelves in the Main collection and can be borrowed for 3 days at a time.

You can renew Recommended Reading books providing another student has not reserved them.

Other books that are in heavy demand, or where each student is required to read just a particular chapter or section in a particular week of the course, are treated as Reserve items. They will be found in the Main collection and may be used within the library for any length of time, but may only be taken from the Library for 4 hours at a time (like the Short Loan readings).

Course Reading Lists

Details of all the books on a course outline or reading list can be found using the Course Reserve option in the Library catalogue or OPAC. Here you can search for books by course code or by your tutor's name.

You will be presented with a list of all the books for a particular course (usually listed alphabetically by title); or you will get a list of all the books on courses taught by the tutor you searched for.
