Past Reunions & Events

Alumni Leadership Committees in cities around the world plan reunions for their local alumni.

Reunions are frequently organized when Richmond's Admissions staff are in town on. Other reunions are organized by local alums because alumni enjoy getting together. Still others are organized by Alumni Relations Office in London working with the local committee to plan the event.

The Annual Worldwide Alumni Reunion takes place at the Hill campus in the first weekend in June. All alumni are invited to sign up and attend. We especially hope to see alumni from anniversary classes who are celebrating 5, 10, 15 20 25 or more years opf graduation from Richmond.

The next Worldwide Reunion will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday June 4,5,and 6,2010. Mark your diaries now and plan business or holiday trips to London at that time so you can join in the fun.

All reunions are open to all Richmond alumni. Make be sure to check the web list of "Planned Reunions and Events" before you travel for business or pleasure and drop in.

He asked the alums present to describe the value and meaning of their time at Richmond. After hearing so many of the fond recollections of the Richmond family and the uniqueness of being an individual--rather than a number--in and out of the classroom, Dr. Newbould commended the alums for describing Richmond's future.

After a group picture on the steps of the Main Building, alumni had a barbecue lunch in the student Common Room. Panels discussions in Business and the Arts followed in the afternoon.

The two panels were planned and executed by Margaree Cotten, MA '07, and Maria Jicheva MBA '99.

Other alumni remained in the Common Room or walked about campus, in between the sprinkling rain.

Everyone came together in the front hall of the Main Building for the raffle prizes. Winning tickets were drawn by Robert Wallis, Director MA Program.

Although the events at the Hill ended after the raffle, many alums retired to the Marlborough Pub on Friar Stile Road. Later in the evening, alums met for dinner in diffferent London venues.

Everyone came together in the front hall of the Main Building for the raffle and close of the reunion at the Hill.

REUNION & PAS DE DEUX ART EXHIBITION OPENING

Many alumni were represented at the Pas de Deux opening on Friday, 7 November, 2008 both as exhibitors and attending the opening.

Going Public, a senior level course in the department of Art Design and Media, mounted this exhibition in the display area of Asa Briggs Hall. This course identifies and develops skills necessary to make the transition from being a student of art to a practicing artist engaged in the professional world. The thrust of the course is to develop practical skills as well as paying attention to understanding and appreciating the public realm critically.

As part of their work this autumn, members of the class mounted their first of two shows that opened on 7 November, 2008. Called Pas de Deux, the exhibition featured art work by current faculty in the ADAM department and work by alumni artists.

They selected the alumni artists, agreed the work and set up transport, mounted the show, set up publicity and arranged the opening night preview party with many alumni attending.

The exhibition featured work by the following alumni and faculty:

REUNIONS IN BRAZIL IN OCTOBER 2008

Mark Kopenski, Vice President for Enrolment Management, was in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in late October on recruitment business. In Rio he met with MBA alumnus Paulo Rubano, Class of 1995.

IN SAO PAULO 20 October, 2008

Paulo is Director of Colagio Apollo, an adult education school in Sao Paulo which provides community college style training for adults who have not had much or any formal education. His family have all been in various types of education so starting this business after 12 years at the Canadian National Bank as a financial officer seemed like a logical next step for Paulo.

Paulo arranged for Mark Kopenski to visit his former secondary school. He has contact with university directors and school owners that could be of assistance to Richmond recruitment in Sao Paulo.

IN RIO DE JANEIRO 25 October, 2008

Jenny Hopkin '85, Chair of the Rio Alumni Leadership Commmittee, organized a reunion for local alums to meet Mark Kopenski. She and her husband, Mike, have set up annual reunions in Rio. jenny and Mike have lived in many places throughout the world and several cities in Brazil.

Because Jenny spent 17 years teaching at the American school in Rio she is very aware of the education context in Rio and able to help Richmond to make connections with schools.

Also attending was Lilian Barros, who was at Richmond from 1983 to 1988, as was her brother Geraldo AA '85. Lilian was willing to help Richmond by possibly arranging internships for undergraduates in local firms.

Everyone hoped that the next reunion would have stronger attendance among the seventeen alumni who live in Rio.

CONCERT FOR RICHMOND

The Philippine Center, Fifth Avenue, NY.

A unique reunion took place in New York City on the afternoon of Sunday, 19 October, 2008. The Philippine Center was the venue for a concert of vibrant music organized by alumnus Daniel Wagner '83.

Earlier in 2008, Dan has established a scholarship for deserving Richmond students from developing countries and he named it after his mother Zill G. Cahn, a holocaust survivor. He organized this concert to raise funds to help to endow the scholarship so that it may continue into perpetuity.

Alumni, friends of Richmond, friends and family of the performers joined President Newbould for a terrific afternoon of classical music in the first part and lighter, show music for the second part. Tenor Fidel Zayco sang beautifully and was accompanied on the piano by EdWard Thompson and on the violin Akiki Kobayashi. His 13 year old niece, Michaela Carlos, joined him to sing in the second part of the concert.

At the reception held afterwards in the Hall in the Philippine Center, alumni from 1972 to 2008 mixed and mingled togehter and also met President Newbould.

The Phillipine Center and the caterer both donated their services in order that donations could be maximized. The event raised more than $5,000 toward the Zilla G. Cahn Scholarship. If alumni would like to establish a scholarship in honor of a family or family member, send an e-mail to alumni@richmond.ac.uk.

For more information and photos of this unique occasion, see the article in the December 2008 HTML Newsletter.

RICHMOND REUNIONS DURING 2007-2008 FROM FALL 2007 TO 11 MARCH, 2008

LISBON, PORTUGAL

On Thursday, 20 September, 2007 Professor Alex Seago was in Lisbon as Panel Chair and Co-organizer of a conference of the International American Studies Association.

He met alumni there in Pavilhao Chines on Rua Dom Pedro V. Alums can see what a funky and original venue it is. It's not especially Chinese: touches of a Viennese café, Habsburg museum, Paris brothel and New Orleans pool hall jostle together in this 19th-century former "fine grocery" store. Designed by Luis Pinto Coelho, it's a cabinet of curiosities including such oddities as: toy soldiers, trains, china dancers, brass tigers, and a score of teapots dangling from the ceiling.

Eleven alumni from graduation years 1995 to 2005 volunteered to come to the Kensington campus for the annual Alumni Panel, that is part of Richmond's Careers Month in February each year. This year for the first time, Richmond's new Careers Adviser co-sponsored the event. Sandra Beyer, Assistant Dean, Career Services, began in this new role in late autumn 2007, and with alumni relations planned this event as one of several careers events focusing on planning for life after Richmond.

On Thursday, 7 February graduate and undergraduate students from all majors attended the panel discussion moderated by Deirdre Simpson, Director of Alumni Relations. After an hour of inciteful and varied comments by alumni about how they have achieved their careers so far including questions from the audience, the opportunity to network over wine and cheese after the panel, provided more individual opportunities for students to make connections with alumni.

Alumni found this opportunity very interesting as they too learned about what other alumni are doing and how they went about it. Students present commented on how helpful the alumni perspectives and comments were.

Other events in Careers Month included Presentation Skills, CV Writing, Visa Consultation, and Career Guidance Session offered on both campuses. Click Career Services for more information abou this new office.
