ALUMNI MEET IN RIO DI JANEIRO

The Richmond Reunion in Rio was a success and alumni joined the reunion organizer Jennifer Hopkin 1985 and her husband Michael (as offical photographer). This was the first reunion in Rio for four or five years.

Alumni who attended were Geraldo Miranda 1983-85, Lillian Barros 1983-85, Paula Dotto 1993, Sheilla Cruz 1998 and Jennifer Hopkin 1985. They enjoyed pizza and beer in the Pizza Park and chatted about Richmond memories and adventures in the 1980s and 1990s. Jennifer noted that each person is using their international experience and English in their careers proving just how valuable their Richmond education has been. Paula and Geraldo have both been back to London since to visit some of their favourite haunts.

Jennifer also received e-mails from Cristiano Leal 2000 and Mathilde Barbosa 1990-91 but they were each unable to join us this time. Those present knew of other Richmond alumni in Rio and were keen to contact them for future reunions. Jennifer has promised to organise another within the year.

RECORD TURN OUT FOR REUNION IN MADRID

One of the "grandfathers" of the reunion Alejandro Ibarrondo,
Class of 1988 with Sergio Casesmeiro, Class of
2006--20 years between them!

Madrid alumni set their own records on Saturday, 9 June, 2007 including--many months in the planning, more alumni contacted and brought together, larger attendance than ever at a Madrid reunion, more members of the class of 1988 than ever, wonderfully positive feeling about Richmond friendships and the years together in London.

Luis Frances 1992, Chair of Madrid Alumni Leadership Committee, began planning this reunion in early Spring in order to contact as many alumni as possible and to persuade as many people to come to the reunion. Luis started with an e-mail to a small group of alumni and ended up contacting a group of more than eighty alumni. Without Luis' passion, commitment and loyalty to Richmond, this reunion would not have happened let alone been as successful.

For a grand style reunion, Luis selected Sky Night, the best elegant bar in Madrid with an impressive terrace at the Hotel Puerta de America. The hotel has been designed by nine different international architects and tempts visitors with its elegance and variety of styles. Cocktails and wine and beer were served at 8 p.m. and alums celebrated together for many hours into the night.

More than twenty-four alumni attended this happy event spanning the years 1987 to 2006. For such a successful and happy event the Alumni Association and Richmond says "Muchisimas gracias" to Luis and to the other alumni who assisted including Felix Romero 1988, Barcelona Alumni Leadership Committee.

Alums who attended:
Begona Aldeanueva 1993, Amagoya , Anil Thakurdas 1988, Javier Ballester 1992, Juan Calderoni 1996, Sergio Casesmeiro 2006, Juan Pablo Cividanes 1988, Joaquin Clot 1994, Jose Maria de Arcas 1993, Alfonso Faubel 1987, Fernando Feldman 1987, Luis Frances 1992, Francesca Garrigues 1992, Marta Gil 1993, Alejandro Ibarrondo 1988, Juan Montel , Mauro Olmedo 1988, Ramon Pozo 1992, Maria Roa 2001, Felix Romero 1988, Diego Von Knobloch 1990 and a few others who did not sign the sign in sheet.

More than the same number of alumni could not attend and have responded eagerly wanting another reunion some time soon.

BRAVO Madrid for such enthusiasm and support. Photos follow.

STUDY ABROAD ALUMS CELEBRATE 25th REUNION IN LONDON

Over the long weekend of England’s Bank Holiday Monday in 2006 alumni from 1981, 1982 and 1983 met together to celebrate their 25th reunion. The event was organized in the US by Steve Baroch Study Abroad 1981-82, his wife Anna Ximenes 1981-82 whom he met at Richmond, and other members of the group.

The group of Study Abroad Alums met on Friday, 25 August in Kensington and they celebrated together for the weekend. They visited the Kensington campus buildings and spent a fair amount of time at the Gloucester Arms as they did 25 years ago. Several of the alums stayed stayed at the Citadines, on Gloucester Road, just a block away from the Gloucester Arms.

They filled their weekend with London activities and visited Punch and Judy's which is where Steve and Ana first met; went to Camden Lock Market, to the London Eye, to the War Rooms, to the Tower, and just spent time together.

Four degree classmates joined the group on a Thames cruise that they had arranged for the evening of 26 August, 2006. These alums included James Yeats Brown ‘83, who is now a successful portrait photographer and who met Steve Baroch in Mary Roberts photography class, Thomas Moulton ‘82, and Bassam Audeh ’82 and Oyekunle Aderemi '82-'83.

Tanko Ahmed Mamuda 1982 was Steve Baroch’s roommate in Atlantic House and had planned to attend the reunion. At the last minute, he was unable to fly to London. So, after the reunion, Steve Baroch and his wife Anna Ximenes Baroch went to Nigeria to visit Tanko in Abuja and Jos.

In Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, Steve and Ana also met Baba Wada ’83. He runs a travel agency and imports medical supplies.

They visited the school of Tanko’s youngest son Saleh, and donated a computer that they had sent in a shipment of bird flu supplies—masks, gloves, first aid kits. They also visited the clinic that Tanko’s wife, Hajara, started and where she works. They need medical supplies and Steve and Ana may try to help them with this.

For the complete story of Steve and Ana’s journey to Nigeria, go to http://www.baroch.net/
and click on Download "Into Africa" in PDF format (3.9 mb)

In an e-mail from Tanko in February he mentioned that “my roommate, Steve Baroch, visited me twice in 2006 and has embarked on community services in education and health in my immediate environment. He brought in books to 4 schools and provided medical supplies to a number of clinics.”

All this stems from the Richmond experience.

BOSTON ALUMNI COMMITTEE REVIVED BY NEW CHAIR

When Ana Petermann- Sims left Boston to marry and move to California, for a while there was no one willing to accept the role of Chair of the Boston Alumni Leadership Committee. As a result, there were no reunions planned.

The reunion took place in The LivingRoom on Atlantic Road, Boston. Many Study Abroad Alums attended as well as Brian Davis, Director of the US Admissions Office in Boston.

Alums who came to reminisce about London and Richmond included:

Marilyn Negip was the most senior alumna present as she was at Richmond Hill in the first year that Richmond College--as it was called then--was in operation.

Thanks to Alison for beginning this tradition again. We look forward to more alumni reunions in Boston in the future.
