Study Abroad - Richmond and the AIFS program in London

London is the ultimate reality classroom. You need not look any further than the City to see modern economics and finance in action, the Tower of London to see the history of Western architecture on display, the Houses of Parliament to see centuries of political thought put into practice, or Kew Gardens to see nearly every species of plant and flower the world has to offer. With its fine museums, libraries, theaters, concert halls, and more parks than any other capital city in the world, there is no other place on earth quite like it.

Kensington, a classy borough and home of Richmond, The American International University in London, is right in zone 1 in the center of London. It offers an eclectic mix of cafés and restaurants, high street shopping and great parks. Kensington offers students the diversity of a big city with the calm atmosphere of a small community.

The London Study Centre

The London study abroad program is designed specifically to take full advantage of all that London has to offer. A history lesson is never further than a Tube ride away, and the classes offered at Richmond provide you with a solid foundation in subjects ranging from international relations and politics to creative writing and modern popular music. Included activities show you England’s royal past, while optional theater visits, sporting events, and a ride on the London Eye plug you right into London’s exciting present.

Accomodation and Facilities

Students live in central London, close to the campus and the famous Kensington Gardens and West End theater district. Accommodations are in double, triple, and quad rooms in University approved residence halls. Since housing is usually in traditional buildings not originally designed to be dormitories, rooms and showers in the older buildings may be smaller than students expect.

Ten meals a week in the student cafeteria are included, credited on smart cards. Extra meals can be purchased in the canteen in Atlantic House for a subsidized student price and also at Imperial College (for about $12 per meal). Kensington has many food establishments where students can purchase food or eat out.

Academic Program in London

Most courses carry three credits per semester. A normal course load is five courses (15 credits) each semester. Study abroad students are encouraged to choose at least three courses from the London Core, supplemented by additional courses from different disciplines to maximize their cultural and educational experience.

London Core Courses

The program at Richmond provides the opportunity for students to select from a core of courses-the London Core-that make special use of the resources available in London. These courses offer students an exciting opportunity to learn about the history, art, architecture, culture, economics and politics of Britain while studying in the very country they're learning about. Many of these classes also satisfy major or general education requirements.

To capitalize on opportunities at this unique multicultural University, study abroad students are strongly encouraged to choose at least three of their five courses from the following London Core courses, and may select the remainder from Richmond's regular degree course offerings.

As these Core courses are specially designed to give study abroad students the best possible academic experience, Richmond will make every effort to accommodate students in the Core courses for which they apply.
