American vs. British educational system
Richmond, the American International University in London operates on the American, four-year, liberal arts education model. Our structure provides an education rich in depth and breadth with an emphasis on the student’s selected program of study in the third and fourth year. Through Richmond's globally-focused, liberal arts curriculum, students acquire a practical understanding of how their chosen field connects with other areas of expertise; for example using math and science to compliment the studies of psychology and philosophy. As a result, Richmond graduates are able to apply their education to their broad range of interests.
In comparison, the British higher education system is structured as a three-year system in which students focus on courses only in their specialized area of study, eliminating the opportunity to take electives outside one’s major. British citizens who have lived in the UK for at least three consecutive years prior to application may attend any in-country university for a nominal fee. Qualifications for entrance into British universities by foreign students can be obtained from Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS).
Rankings and ratings
Richmond is located outside the US, and is therefore excluded from the college rating game. Using established ranking criteria set by the US News and World Report Private National Colleges and Universities, Richmond University would be ranked in the top tier of the private university international category and in tier two in regard to academic quality. Richmond is one of few universities uniquely recognized by two nation’s educational governing bodies, both the US and the UK.
Increasingly, the measurement of a world-class university includes the diversity of its student body, adding to the ethnic and cultural richness of the learning environment. Richmond falls into the top tier in the area of diversity in both US and UK rankings. With students from over 1OO countries and an enrollment of fewer than 1200 students, Richmond has consistently been the most internationally represented University in the world. With no majority nationality dominating the University landscape and a class room environment that represents the future of an ever changing global community, Richmond is well positioned to help students prepare for a world that will no longer be limited by boarders and distance. An internal faculty from over 40 nations works with each student as an individual to help customize this unique international experience.
