Mission and Goals

Richmond University’s MA in Art History program, with its unique intercultural focus and sustained engagement with modern and postmodern art, offers a thorough grounding in art historical theories and methods, as well as inter-disciplinary theories and methods available for approaching art across cultures.

MA faculty enable students to apply these perspectives and skills in their personal and professional lives, developing students’ appreciation of cultural commonality, diversity and difference, and preparing students for further graduate study or careers in the visual.

Successful students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a grounding in art historical theories and methods at graduate level as well as the inter-disciplinary approaches available for approaching art across cultures and the permeable interface between ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ arts and cultures
  • articulate intellectual awareness of nineteenth century modernisms, twentieth century modernisms, and postmodern visual art and culture, and the expression of these in key examples
  • evince visual literacy including formal analysis, critical engagement with texts and objects, and graduate level research, writing and presentation skills
