The Richmond MA in Art History is an exciting, challenging and cutting-edge academic program, completed over one year in a central London location.

As the discipline now looks beyond the Western canon, so our MA in Art History is ‘global’ in its scope and interdisciplinary in its approach. The degree engages students with intercultural issues in visual culture and the variety of ‘modernisms’ from the nineteenth century to the contemporary art of today.

This intensive programme will interest students who are committed to serious research: world-class museums, galleries, libraries, archives and other resources are on our doorstep, offering an outstanding ‘learning laboratory’ for the study of ‘other’ cultures and their interface with ‘the West’.

The Richmond MA is unique because of its intercultural focus. Students are required to take a core methodology course which enables them to develop tools for understanding the relationships across and between cultures. This ensures invaluable training for further research in the field as research on the visual arts becomes more international and intercultural. In addition to this, experience has shown that our intercultural training has enhanced our graduates' employability.

Our Masters in Art History is both a preparatory step towards a research degree and a qualification for employment in the visual arts, and we are committed to offering a course of study that will ensure the employability of our graduates. It is then perhaps no surprise that so many of our graduates have gone on to work in museums and galleries.

Around one third of graduating MA students each year continue into PhD or other postgraduate degrees, including Doctoral programs at the University of Keele and the University of the Arts in London, and Harvard University and Florida State University in the US. A further third of our graduates go on to work in galleries and museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum and National Gallery, and Sotheby's auction house in London, as well as Christie's auction house in New York, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Seattle Art Museum in the USA. Alumni are also working in such professions as art law, insurance, education and administration.
