Mission and Goals
Mission
Richmond University’s MA in Art History and Visual Culture offers sustained engagement with the visual arts from an intercultural perspective, training students in the professional skills required for career placement in the arts and creative cultural industries. The program brings historians, theoreticians and professional practitioners together to 1) offer a thorough grounding in the interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of the visual, and 2) equip students with the professional skills and experience to work successfully in a variety of arts and cultural industries.
Goals
- To provide students with a thorough grounding in the interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological issues for the study of art history and visual culture
- To equip students with the key skills and knowledge for careers in the arts and creative cultural industries
- To train students to apply their accumulated experience, knowledge and skills to their personal lives, developing appreciation of cultural commonality, diversity and difference

To maintain academic standards equal to or better than comparable MA degrees offered by UK universities
Learning Outcomes
Successful students will be able to:
- articulate a systematic knowledge of the interdisciplinary theories and methods related to the study of visual culture in a contemporary global setting and in historical context;
- evince visual literacy including formal analysis, critical engagement with texts and objects, and graduate level research, writing and presentation skills;
- demonstrate the skills and experience required to work as scholars and professionals in the arts and creative cultural industries.
- show innovative, creative and independent thinking and scholarship, applying skills, knowledge and experience learned on the program, in the production of a 10-12,000 word thesis.
