Liz Boyle, Art History intern at the Kings Road Gallery, London. Fall 2011

My internship at Kings Road Gallery & Tanya Baxter Contemporary in Chelsea has been the best experiences of my life. I was able to learn and understand more than I thought I could about the world of art. I have learned how to properly care for works of art, organize events and shows, and take part in art fairs. I was lucky enough to be involved with the LAPADA and Art London art fairs, the Indian artist M.F. Husain’s Retrospective at the Royal Academy, the auction lot for The Mayors Fund for London’s charity event Square Mile Masked Ball, and an exhibition for artist Pip Todd Warmoth in Paris.

I couldn’t have asked for a better placement for an internship or a more special group of people to work with than what I have been given at Kings Road. I have been lucky in my choice and will forever cherish the memories I have made there.

Rebekah Russo, Psychology Intern at Save the Children, London. Fall 2011

My name is Rebekah Russo and I was placed at Save the Children's Farringdon office within their campaigns team. I spent the past year with Americorps working as an assistant to a Fundraising and Outreach Coordinator at CDS Family & Behavioral Services. I have worked very hard and it has paid off in more ways than one. I feel I have learned so much, made some brilliant contacts and laid a foundation for my career in the nonprofit sector; as I have been informed that the Campaigns and Advocacy Division will be expanding next year and I may have a chance to stay on. I have been given my own Save the Children blog site and was asked to write a piece covering our Annual Campaigner Conference 2011.

Emily Rabadi, Marketing & Public Relations Intern for E! Entertainment and Style network under NBCUniversal London. Fall 2011

I decided to intern abroad because I wanted to challenge myself with something new and exciting. I feel that especially in the communications industry it is necessary to see the world from a larger perspective. While interning at NBCUniversal, I particularly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with different areas of the world everyday- South Africa, Poland, France, Germany, Italy …just to name a few!

Overall, I learned you should never limit yourself to your academic focus. Instead, explore your interests and passions and always stay open to new opportunities wherever they may be.

Lindsey Reiff, Psychology Intern at the Collingham Family and Child Centre, London. Fall 2011

I worked at Collingham Child and Family Centre this Fall semester and learned more about psychology than I ever could have imagined as an intern. London has been such a moving and eye opening experience for me and I would recommend the program to anyone!

Victoria Hook, Political Science and International Relations Intern at the Co-operative Party, London. Summer 2011.

I loved my internship with the Co-operative Party. I learned so much about Parliament and British Politics, way more than I could have from a book or even a course. Experiencing it first hand was an amazing opportunity that I would recommend to anyone! I’m really going to miss my placement at the Co-operative Party, the excitement of parliamentary activity, and all of the people that I have met during this internship.

Alisha Monroe, Business Administration Intern at Stonewall, London. Summer 2011.

I did my internship at Stonewall, the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual charity. This work opportunity was by far the best decision I've ever made as I have met many amazing people and created priceless friendships. I learned an invaluable set of skills that I can apply to my schoolwork and also the real world. These past three months have opened my eyes to a new culture that can only be grasped by experience, and ive enjoyed every second of my time abroad.

Alysia Pope, Communications Intern at Freemantle Media, London. Summer 2011.

Working at Freemantle Media has been a truly priceless experience. I was able to learn from some of the best people in the business. I not only gained knowledge in the professional field, but I also gained mentors and people that I will be in touch with for a far longer time after I leave London. I could not have asked for a better experience, doors have opened for me that I wasn't even aware had existed!

Steven Richards, Psychology Intern at the University College London, London. Summer 2011.

London is a city of diversity, vibrancy and beauty: a few of the reasons I chose to intern here. Since my placement I have learned more about psychology, different cultures, and myself than I could have ever hoped. Any placement here will better help to enrich your life like it has mine. My internship in psychology was supervised by Professor Adrian Furnham at University of College London’s Division of Psychology and Language Sciences. Because it was mainly research based I was exposed to varied aspects of research psychology ranging from reviewing literature on topics that both Dr. Furnham and I were interested in to database creation using the statistical program SPSS and data entry in order to later analyse collected data. A significant characteristic about working in his office is that his interests in psychology are so assorted there is always something to perk your special interests. I have learned more in my experience with Adrian than I have learned from any single class or internship I have had back in the States. I attribute this to my immersion in cultural differences while having to overcome the dares of novel and challenging projects offered to me by the internship.

Mihir Sheth, Finance and Accounting Intern at the International Transport Workers Federation, London. Summer 2011.

Taking a different path defines my existence, and as a finance and accounting major I just could not see myself as an intern in one of those firms that the six o’clock news constantly covers. The ITF is a very international, non-profit organization that is different and so are the workdays. One day I will be learning how to pay off employee expenses in three different currencies and a fourth one that no longer exists on company credit cards. And the next day, I will be sitting in a regional directors’ meeting listening to a lecture from a union boss from London and then to updates about government tactics to break up unions in Paraguay.

The two greatest features of my internship are that, firstly, as the company is overhauling their financial and accounting systems, I am in a very unique position to actually see management move the gears, implement new programs and initiatives and to learn from the mistakes and successes that occur. Second, the small-size company feel allows for regular problem-solving tips from the Director of Finance and actual involvement in the finance department’s meetings.

Mia Bella Josimovic, Finance Intern at ACN Worldwide in Shanghai, China. Summer 2011.

I was very fortunate to be interning for ACN Worldwide. Not only did they offer me a position in Shanghai several times, but since I told them I need to go back to London, they have decided to create a job for me in London. In my last week with the company, I was able to create and present an investment package. Once bought, I will be in charge of managing the property. My boss has also recommended me to several other real estate companies in London so I can have a full time job while the ACN property management career grows into a full time job. I have estimated that I will be able to manage approximately 100 properties without help, while also having a full time job. Once I exceed this number, and I hope that it happens soon, I will be able to hire someone else in London to help me, like an assistant, or make ACN my fulltime job. I have also learned of many other investment opportunities regarding real estate, which I am hoping with my two jobs I will be able to save money to then invest myself. At least, that is the life plan for now.

I am so glad I decided to take this internship opportunity and honestly cannot wait to see where life will take me and how far I will go with my new knowledge and job connections.

Amelia Bischoff, Finance Intern at the Soho Theatre in London. Summer 2011.

When interning at the Soho Theatre, I was able work in a financial department while submerged in a creative environment. The Soho Theatre has a diverse programme featuring theatre, comedy and writer’s events while also being home to a large bar and restaurant. I took on tasks at an employee level managing income, expenditure, equity, banking, payroll, balance sheets and journal entries for the entire venue. The faculty put my learning needs before anything else, which allowed me to get so much out of the experience. Interacting with people from another culture in the business world and on the streets will be incredibly beneficial later on in life. London’s vibrant city has beautiful sights, amazing food and a great night life, all within a short distance! The friends I met and the connections I made will stay with me forever!

Jennifer Gates, Fortune Cookie, Summer 2009

Jennifer Gates - Fortune Cookie
Graphic Design

As a creative intern at Fortune Cookie, I got to use the skills I learned as a Richmond student in a real world environment. Fortune Cookie is a company which designs and produces websites for such clients as Europcar, Miss Selfridge and LTA, and as part of their design team I learned a lot about professional web design techniques and practices as well has getting hands on experience in the field.

I had a terrific time, and learned a lot, but the best part was being a part of a team and seeing my designs used in ad campaigns and on various websites.

Kara Dailey, Macmillan Cancer Support, Summer 2009

Kara Dailey - Macmillan
Economics & Finance

Throughout my eight week internship at Macmillan Cancer Support, opportunities arose that allowed me to learn about the structure of a charitable organisation as well as speak with senior employees to gain insight into the world of full time work in a professional setting. I learned how to shape my perception; to see scenarios in a positive light. I took responsibility for seeking out ways to expand my learning, despite not being placed in a field directly relating to my university majors.

I discovered the importance of networking and in the process became rather assertive as an individual. Being more outspoken enabled me to participate in several Macmillan sponsored events which brought a smile to my face and increased the level to which I identified with Macmillan. I became excited about my work and will truly miss the wonderful team of employees at Macmillan Cancer Support.

Gray Swink, United Response, Summer 2009

Gray Swink - United Response
History

I had the best experience of my life. My work placement couldn't have been a better fit. I have completed many projects and I have been given praise for my work – United Response has let me realise that I want to go into non-profit work. It has helped me tremendously for life after college, because I worked at a reputable company and figured out what I want to do after graduation. London was amazing and an experience that I will always treasure.

Merve Stolzman, GE Legal, Summer 2009

Merve Stolzman - GE Legal
International Relations

During my internship at the Legal Department at GE Capital Solutions Europe, I learned an immense amount about business law and how the theory of the laws can be applied practically. However, many of the issues I dealt with revolved around contractual law rather than litigation. I spent most of my time researching documents for relevant information and then inputting that information into specific programmes so that others could utilize this information.

The knowledge I gained made this internship one of the most educational experiences I have had outside the university. When you have the opportunity to actually go out and implement and utilize the knowledge you gained at school, the opportunities for growth are endless. That is the true benefit of this internship and I would recommend anyone who is interested in pursuing a legal profession to take advantage of such an opportunity.

Dessislava Mladenova, UCL, Summer 2009

Dessislava Mladenova, UCL

Dessislava Mladenova - UCL
Psychology

I did my internship placement with the Vision Research Lab at University College London (UCL) where I worked on face perception. My work was much more dynamic than I initially expected. My duties included working on the preparation of the stimuli for different experiments, participating in different experiments, recruiting participants for experiments, participating in department meetings and even filming prospective students during an Open Day at UCL and projecting their speech and facial motion onto famous faces.

Overall, I think that my internship experience was extremely beneficial in terms of shedding more light into my future academic plans. Before starting the placement, I was very confused in terms of what I wanted to do with a degree in psychology. Now, I definitely see myself going into research. I believe that having done an internship at a prestigious university such as UCL is a great advantage when applying for a Masters Degree.

Amela Selimovic, HSBC, Summer 2008

Amela Selimovic, HSBC

Amela Selimovic - HSBC
Business Administration

My internship at HSBC Bank plc was a unique workplace experience and a turning point in my starting career. I expected the internship to be a great opportunity to gain professional and academic development before graduation. I was unsure of what I wanted to do after I graduate and I thought an internship would increase my knowledge of various careers and help me to rule out professions that are not suitable for me.

While interning in HSBC, I visited branches, learned how they operate, interacted with senior management on daily basis, and was able to sit in on different case management meetings. This internship benefited me in many ways including feedback I received on performed tasks and exposure to a workplace environment. I had an exciting and enjoyable experience and was fortunate to be given an opportunity to continue to work for HSBC after the internship and to find my profession even before I graduated.

Mary O'Donoghue, CNN, Summer 2008

This summer I had the privilege to enroll in the Richmond summer internship program. Being an international business student, I knew that wanted to work in a company that would give me a lot of experience and some guidance as to what I would like to do in the near future. With the help of Richmond's internship faculty, I applied and was accepted for an 11 week internship at CNN International based in the heart of London. Over the summer I worked in the business development and marketing departments of the world renowned news media channel.

I was given a lot of responsibility and some of the projects that I had worked on were handed to my superior managers. My colleagues were very genuine people and treated me as one of their own and not as a summer intern. Overall, I was very pleased with my internship and I am so thankful for all the insight it has provided me with. I would strongly recommend all business majors to consider the internship program; it is an essential course that will show you what it is like to work in the corporate world.

This internship experience will definitely influence my decision making in the future. The main thing that this has taught me is that I can do anything I set my mind to. I came all the way across the country by myself. I was scared to death about what I would do when I got here and thought I might want to leave. Knowing that I can do something like this and succeed more than I ever thought that I would has made me more confident in myself and trusting in my own decision making. Another thing I have learned is to listen to my heart and step out of my comfort zone.

Since I have been here, it has made me realize that I do not always have to take the easy route or settle for less than the best. I am so lucky to have this opportunity to teach me that I am okay going anywhere in the world on my own, starting out on my own, and creating a life of my own. Upon leaving London, I will return to school to finish my last term. My dream is not to settle for going where everyone goes. I hope that I will be brave enough to go somewhere and start my own life without anyone’s help. It would be nice to see and live in different parts of the world!

As a student approaching graduation, I always believed that a strong theoretical foundation and good practical knowledge is the key to a successful future career.

All of the courses I have taken at Richmond University helped me gain the theoretical foundation (which is still to be built), and my internship at France Telecom has helped me gain ‘real’ world experience.

The time spent at FT has been very valuable and I believe the internship will improve my marketability after I graduate.

Working at E! has been an amazing experience. As an International Business major it has allowed me to gain knowledge in the field as E! is operated all over America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It was a great atmosphere and even better were the people that contributed to one of best experiences anyone could ask for!

Jennifer Driscoll
Imagine a world full of A-List Celebrities, True Hollywood Stories, lovely people, a brand new office, and a casual and friendly environment. This is not an imaginary place in my world -- this is what I experience everyday at E! Entertainment. I feel I do contribute to the company and I work really hard on my daily tasks and projects. I feel like my co-workers give me a lot of responsibility. I am there to learn and they respect that. They get me involved in my job and I really appreciate everything they have done for me.

Working for Radisson Edwardian in London has been such an incredibly fun learning experience. Being able to intern with such a well-known company has given me the opportunity to further my future career path in marketing.

I liked the fact that each day had something new to offer. From hotel show-arounds to dressing up for "The Edwards", I know this experience with Radisson will be one that will stay with me forever.
