English Placement Test

All degree students entering Richmond are required to take the English Placement Test during the orientation period preceding the start of their first semester. The test covers competence in grammar, reading comprehension, listening skills, and essay writing. A committee of faculty evaluates each student’s performance.

Students are then placed in one of the following programs according to their assessed level:

FP1 and FP2 students take three linked courses:

Foundations Program Stage 1

ELD 150 Fundamentals of Academic Syntax (3 CREDITS).
ELD 151 Fundamentals of Academic Reading (3 CREDITS).
ELD 152 Fundamentals of Academic Writing (3 CREDITS).

Foundations Program Stage 2

FP2 students take three linked courses:
ELD 160 Fundamentals of Conceptual Thinking (3 CREDITS).
ELD 161 Fundamentals of Academic Research (3 CREDITS).
ELD 162 Fundamentals of Academic Communication (3 CREDITS).

Academic Research and Writing Program:
ENG 115 Principles of Academic Writing (3 CREDITS).
ENG 215 Principles of Academic Research (4 CREDITS).
